Chimamanda Adichie and Late Stella Adadevoh make CNN's leading women 2014

Two phenomenal Nigerian women, Chimamanda Adichie and late Dr Stella Adadevoh have been recognized by international media house, Cable News Network CNN, as some of the world's leading women for the year 2014.

In a list released earlier today by CNN, late Dr Stella Adadevoh was recognized for her significant contribution towards the prevention of the spread of the deadly Ebola virus in Nigeria while Chimamanda was recognized  for her contributions to African Literature.

Other women who made the list included Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Oscar award winning actress Lupita Nyong'o, and IMF Chairman Christine Lagard

France to deploy soldiers after spate of attacks

France is to step up police and military patrols in areas frequented by the public following recent attacks, Prime Minister Manuel Valls has said.

He said up to 300 soldiers would be deployed around the country to boost security over the Christmas period.

The attacks, seemingly unrelated, in Nantes, Dijon and Tours have left more than 20 people injured.
One person injured in Monday's attack on a Christmas market in Nantes has been declared clinically dead.

Nine others were injured in the incident, where a man drove a van towards a stall in the market before repeatedly stabbing himself.

In Dijon on Sunday, a driver shouting "God is great" in Arabic ploughed into pedestrians, injuring 13 people.

On Saturday, a man using the same phrase was shot dead by police after attacking them.

Northampton's Dylan Hartley gets three-week ban for elbow offence

Northampton Saints' Dylan Hartley has been suspended for three weeks by the Rugby Football Union for elbowing Leicester's Matt Smith.
England hooker Hartley caught Tigers centre Smith off the ball during Saturday's 23-19 Premiership win.
The 28-year-old, who pleaded guilty, will miss games against Harlequins, Newcastle and Sale. It is the fifth time he has been banned.
England start their Six Nations campaign against Wales on 6 February.
An elbowing offence carries a minimum two-week ban, but Jeremy Summers, the judicial officer who heard the case by conference call, said the suspension "reflects the player's record rather than the seriousness of the offence itself".

Man Utd: Louis van Gaal grateful for Sir Alex Ferguson 'belief'

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal says the "confidence and belief" former boss Sir Alex Ferguson has shown in him has made his job easier.
In his first season at Old Trafford, Dutchman Van Gaal has led United to third in the Premier League despite injuries to a host of players.
Ferguson this week described Van Gaal as "a great coach" who "will do well".
"He has belief and I'm happy with that," said Van Gaal, 63. "Then you can work in an easier way."
United have suffered more than 40 injuries in the five months since Van Gaal took charge.
They are set to be without Daley Blind, Marcos Rojo, Luke Shaw, Marouane Fellaini and Ander Herrera for the Boxing Day match against Newcastle United at Old Trafford.
Ferguson is now a United director after stepping down in 2013, having won 38 trophies during his 26-year reign.
"You hope that he shall support you," said Van Gaal. "He showed a lot of confidence and belief in me and that I need as a coach.

Algeria: Leader of group that beheaded French hiker is killed

  The Algerian military has killed the leader of an Algerian terror group that beheaded FrenchhikHerve Gourdel earlier this year, the state-run Algeria Press Service reported Tuesday. 

Gouri Abdelmalek, leader of Jund al Khilafa, and two other militants were killed in the Algerian city of Isser after the military set an unspecified "trap," for them, APS reported Tuesday, citing Algeria's defense ministry.
 
The report of Abdelmalek's death comes roughly three months after Jund al Khilafa -- a small Islamist group formerly linked to al Qaeda -- published a video showing the beheading of Gourdel in what the group said was a display of support to al Qaeda's rival ISIS.

Gourdel, 55, was hiking in central Algeria's Djudjura National Park when he was abducted in September. Jund al Khilafa, having just declared allegiance to the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS), then published a video of Gourdel's beheading on September 24.

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho said;
"These victories mean more than three points, to win and get three points the players need the right spirit and mentality, to win here they must be a really very good team with the capacity to adapt to Stoke's style of play.
"At that time [when Phil Bardsley tackled Eden Hazard] I felt the tackle was a bad one but if it was a bad one it was the only one. If the referee decided not to give a red and lost control of the game it is a problem but he kept control and we reacted well. At the end of the day it was a fair game, a typical English winter game.
"Now we have to focus on the three matches we still have until the end of this period. Playing against Big Sam is a hard job for us, we have to cope with it. The three point lead we have is a little advantage, it is a little pillow we have to protect us - we go home happy and pleased with what we did."

Magical Cristiano Ronaldo added to the list of legends as he was immortalized in bronze statue outside his personal museum

The legendry Cristiana Ronald Already boasting a treasure trove of trophies has just landed another great one, the latest addition to Cristiano Ronaldo's own personal museum is a 10-foot bronze statue of  himself.
The "CR7 Museum opened in December 2013 in the Real Madrid attacker's hometown of Funchal, on the Portuguese island of  Madeira houses more than 125 awards, including the two Ballon d'Or titles he won in 2008 and 2013 after being voted the world's best player. 
   
And now standing outside to greet those fans who make the pilgrimage to pay homage to one of football's greats is a mammoth sculpture of the Portugal captain in all his glory.
Ronaldo, fresh from helping Madrid lift FIFA's Club World Cup in Morocco on Saturday, was in Funchal just 24 hours later to unite with his family for the statue's official unveiling.
"I feel so proud to be honored with a statue in Madeira," Ronaldo wrote on his official Twitter account.
"It's a huge joy to share this moment with my family and the people from Madeira. Thank you all for the warm reception."
While in Funchal, Ronaldo also found time to receive the "Cordão Autonómico de Distinção" -- the highest distinction of Madeira.
The 29-year-old has enjoyed a 2014 to remember, having helped Madrid lift the European Champions League, European Super Cup and Spanish Copa del Rey, as well as the Club World Cup.
Ronaldo, who has scored 34 goals in 27 games for club and country this season, is favorite to land the 2014 Ballon d'Or ahead of Barcelona's Lionel Messi and Bayern Munich's Manuel Neuer, with the result being announced on January 12, 2015.
